Mirador de Aldehuela: the gorge beside the Puente Nuevo

The Mirador de Aldehuela is a public balcony over the Tajo gorge on the old-town side of the Puente Nuevo, where Calle Armiñán begins. It gives you a close view of the bridge’s arch, the sheer drop of the gorge and the Serranía mountains. There is no ticket or opening time, and it is named after the bridge’s architect.

Getting there

From Plaza de España, in El Mercadillo, walk across the Puente Nuevo towards La Ciudad. As soon as you step off the bridge, Calle Armiñán begins and the viewpoint opens up over the gorge: it is the first balcony you reach in the old town.

If you are arriving by car or from the station, getting here covers the options for reaching the bridge on foot.

What you see

It is a short, vertical view: the Puente Nuevo up close, its stone piers dropping towards the Guadalevín river and the full depth of the gorge. Beyond lies the Serranía de Ronda.

It pairs well with the viewpoints on the other side. The Alameda del Tajo, next to the bullring, looks out over farmland and mountains from the top of the cliff; the Mirador de Aldehuela puts you right beside the bridge. To see them in order, follow the Ronda viewpoints walk.

Why it has this name

It honours José Martín de Aldehuela, an architect from Manzanera (Teruel) who built the Puente Nuevo, completed in 1793. The bullring of the Real Maestranza is also attributed to him. The full story of the bridge, including the first attempt that collapsed in 1741, is in our Puente Nuevo guide.

Fitting it into your walk

The viewpoint is the gateway to La Ciudad: from here you can carry on along Calle Armiñán into the old town, or head back over the bridge to Paseo de Blas Infante and the Alameda. If you only have a few hours, combine it with the essentials of Ronda in one day.

It is worth coming back at dusk, when the bridge is lit. And if you would like to sit down with the gorge in front of you, La Pilastra’s terrace is right next to the viewpoint; a table above the Tajo explains how to ask for one.

Tips for your visit

  1. Go early or late in the afternoon for softer light and fewer people in your photos.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes: the old town is hilly and stone-paved.
  3. Combine it with the Puente Nuevo and the Jardines de Cuenca to see the bridge from three different heights.
